How can we help every child's voice be heard in group discussions?
This project is part of an international collaboration between researchers in HRI from the UK, Canada, India, Bangladesh and Japan.
We developed an interactive wristband system to support children who struggle to express themselves in group settings. Each child wears a wristband connected to "Speak with Buddy!", a mobile app that teachers use to set discussion parameters like time limits and speaking thresholds. The wristband uses gentle LED lights and pleasant buzzer sounds to encourage balanced participation. When a child hasn't spoken, a yellow light prompts them to share; when they've spoken extensively, a green light signals it's time for others. The system intelligently manages turn-taking when multiple quiet children need encouragement simultaneously. Beyond the classroom, teachers and parents gain insights into children's social development, helping them build communication confidence over time.
This technology addresses a real classroom challenge: ensuring inclusive participation without singling out shy students. By providing subtle, supportive cues, the wristband creates equitable discussion opportunities while fostering social skills development.
