Game-Based Learning Framework for Dyslexic Children
Conference Publication 1
Conference Publication 2
This work was a research collaboration with University of Bristol, UK and Mondragon University, Spain. Learning with dyslexia requires different approaches. What if a robot could provide personalized, multi-sensory support?
This framework integrates NAO, a humanoid social robot, with four interactive games (PSSS) designed specifically for dyslexic children aged 5-10. Each game addresses different learning modalities while making skill-building enjoyable and pressure-free.
Picture Memory pairs words with colorful flashcards to strengthen visual-audio associations and listening skills. Sound and Read uses the "clapping technique" to teach syllable separation, progresses to reading practice with flashcards, and concludes with NAO as a storytelling companion. Spelling employs a magnetic board with colorful letters, allowing children to physically construct words at their own pace, NAO only checks when the child taps its head. Spatial helps children practice directional awareness (left, right, middle) through a playful farmland map activity.
The framework draws from educational psychology, linguistic studies, and special education pedagogies, incorporating positive reinforcement, varied dialogue prompts, and child-paced learning. NAO's consistent, patient presence and modulated voice create a supportive learning environment. While initially teleoperated, this system demonstrates how socially assistive robots can address multiple learning styles simultaneously, potentially improving not just academic skills but also confidence and well-being in children with learning differences.
