Land of Hands: Collaborative Gameplay for Hand Hygiene

Conference Publication

Conference Publication

This project is an extension of my research with HakshE, in collaboration with Mr. Rajesh Sharma, a senior software developer at Walt Disney Animation Studios and Vice President of Engineering Spire Animation Studio, USA. It showcases a collaborative educational game where children team up with the HakshE robot to rescue a princess captured by germs, blending gamification with the CASA (Computers as Social Actors) paradigm to make handwashing learning enjoyable.

Built using Godot's 2D engine and Alice 3, three sequential levels test hand hygiene knowledge: (1) Matching hand parts involved in washing, (2) Word puzzle with key vocabulary, (3) Picture ordering of WHO's six handwashing steps. Game elements include six golden keys as rewards, glowing scrolls with questions, help buttons that pause the timer, and a points system, all designed to position HakshE as a teammate rather than just a tutor.

In a month long study in India with children, it was found that the platform successfully delivered learning outcomes while demonstrating that pro-social robot behaviors create more enjoyable and engaging interactions for encouraging long-term behavior change.
